VANESSA HARVELL, LMFT

Healing and transformation is possible for everyone and every relationship. As a psychotherapist specializing in sex and couples therapy, I work with men, women and couples experiencing various sexual or relationship issues; including trauma/abuse, anxiety, low or differing libido(s), addiction (whether sexual in nature or not), infidelity, painful intercourse, sexual/relationship inexperience, erectile dysfunction and rapid ejaculation. As well as other life stressors and issues that impact romantic relationships. With sensitivity, respect and expertise, I will help guide you through the healing process to reduce shame and anxiety, break hurtful patterns and behaviors and find a deeper sense of connection and empowerment.

Prior to my career as a psychotherapist, I was a sexual health educator in the Bay Area as well as an advocate and outreach organizer for high-risk individuals in LGBTQ and straight communities. My passion for mental and sexual health led me to Los Angeles to earn two Masters degrees from Pepperdine University in General Psychology and Psychology with an Emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy. During this time, I was a Research Coordinator and publishing author at the Los Angeles VA Medical Center and UCLA studying the neurological effects of HIV and Hepatitis C on the brain as well as the efficacy of pharmaceutical and behavioral interventions on mental health issues.

I gained my clinical experience in several mental health settings and clinics in Los Angeles while also pursuing post-graduate training in sex and couples therapy from American Association of Couples and Sex Therapist, Emotionally Focused Therapy with Dr. Sue Johnson and Sex Addiction from the Center for Healthy Sex. I am trained in body-centered, mindfulness and trauma recovery models including EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), Sensorimotor, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and MBSR (Mindfulness-Based-Stress Reduction).

I know that there is no one way to find the path to healing, and that is why I personalize my work for every client and relationship. Through a collaborative and safe therapeutic process, we will identify your goals, use effective and solution-focused interventions and help you achieve a more fulfilling and authentic relationship with yourself and your partner.
